View NW of Brunton Turret 26b, Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, England, UK, showing a stretch of narrow gauge Wall built on wide gauge Wall foundations. The original plan of AD 122 was to build the Wall 3m (10ft) thick but this was soon reduced to 8ft (). Turrets were built recessed into 10ft wing walls ready for the Wall to be built up to them. To the W of Brunton the Wall is wide gauge on a 10ft foundation. On the E side a 6ft () thick Wall built on a wide base approaches & goes over the 10ft wing wall of the turret. Fortlets called milecastles were built every Roman mile (c English miles) along the Wall with two turrets equally spaced within each mile. Turrets were usually around 6m square externally with a door at the S. The ground floor served as a mess room for a small number of soldiers, the upper storey was used as a lookout to observe & signal enemy movements N of the Wall. Brunton Turret was built by men of the Twentieth Legion (Valeria Victrix) based in Chester.
