Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Column detail on the Parthenon in Centennial Park, a full-scale replica of the original in Athens, Greece.

Column detail on the Parthenon in Centennial Park, which functions as an art museum, is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece. The structure was designed by architect William Crawford Smith and built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. The building is a total reproduction of the original including using paints that were selected to recreate how the original was thought to have looked. Nashville has been often referred to as the 'Athens of the South,' a nickname that influenced the choice of structures for the 1897 exposition event. The Parthenon was the only structure built as an exact replica at that time and is the only surviving building from the exposition still in Nashville. Centennial Park, not far from downtown, is Nashville's premier green space area.
