Close-up image of papaya fruit and seeds. The papaya is the fruit of the plant Carica papaya. It is native to the tropics of the Americas. The fruit is ripe when it feels soft and its skin has attained an amber to orange hue. The ripe fruit is usually eaten raw but without skin or seeds. The papaya has relatively high amount of pectin. The black seeds are also edible but due to their sharp, spicy taste, we do not often eat them. Papaya is known to cure digestive problems.
