One description of cap or bonnet continued, how-ever, for a long time in favour. It was called a calash, and is said to have beeninvented in 1765, by theDuchess of Bedford. Thecalash was formed like thehood of a carriage, and wasstrengthened with whale-bone hoops, so that bymeans of a string in front,connected with the hoops,it could either be drawnforwards over the face, or it might be thrownbackwards over the hair. In the above cut, taken from a print engravedin 1780, the calash isthrown back, and thestring hangs looselyover the face. In thenext cut, the calash isshewn as drawn for-wards ; and the secondlady wears another ofthe numerous extrava-gant head-dresses ofthe day. This grou
