Just east of Union Square on 14th Street is TammanyHall, the headquarters of a society which was organized forbenevolent purposes, but soon developed into a strongpolitical institution. The society took its name from anIndian chief of the pioneer period, and the officers bear thetitle of sachems, and call their hall a wigwam. The firstmeeting was held on IVIay 12th, St. Tammanys Day, in1789. Peter Stuyvesant, the most picturesque of the Dutchrulers of New Amsterdam, had a country place in the vicinityof 14th Street.
