Tsunami simulation. First of 3 three-dimensional computer simulation images showing the giant sea wave (tsunami) in Cadiz Bay, Spain, 1 hour 6 minutes after its creation during an earthquake in 1755. Water is blue and land is yellow. The tsunami is shown as ripples on the flat surface of the sea. Tsunamis are about metres (m) high in the open sea but may be 15 m high or more as they approach land. This computer model was designed as part of the international Genesis and Impact of Tsunamis on European Coasts (GITEC) project to assess the effects of a possible tsunami in the near future.
