began the ;present building in 1084 replacing earlier cathedrals, with a Benedictine monastery attached to it. It continued until 1540 when Henry VIII dissolved it. The largest restorations were carried our by the Victorians in 1854-75. Sir Edward Elgar performed here during the 3 Choirs Festival
