Sir Edwin Chadwick (1800-1890), English social reformer. Chadwick was born in Manchester. He supported himself through a legal education by writing. His essays in the Westminster Review caught the eye of Jeremy Bentham, who engaged him as an assistant and left him a legacy. As a lawyer he was employed by the Royal Commission established to investigate the workings of the Poor Laws. The 1834 report didnÕt go far enough for Chadwick, and he was regarded as difficult to work with. In his spare time, Chadwick studied the problems of sanitation and his works on public health proved enormously beneficial. He was knighted in 1889.
