During the spring of the year, many of the little cells of thecolony give protection to minute, orange-colom-ed eggs, from which escape in due timetiny free-swimming creatures, who after enjoying for awhile their free life settle downupon some comfortable and suitable resting-place and become the founders of newcolonies. From a single individual, the colony rapidly grows, and increases both insize and the number of its members, by a most remarkable budding process whichtakes place all round what may be termed the growing edge of the THE TEANSFOElMATION OP THE Free-swimming offspring of and 3.
