Like the camel, they have powersof abstaining long from drink, sometimes forfour or five days ; like that animal, their food iscoarse. In a wild state they keep in great herdsin the highest and steepest parts of the hills; andwhile they are feeding, one keeps sentry on thepinnacle of some rock : if it perceives the ap-proach of any one it neighs ; the herd take thealarm, and go oft with incredible speed. Theyoutrun all dogs : there is no way of killing thembut with the gun. They are killed for the sakeof their flesh and hair; for the Indians weavethe last into cloth.
