It was in the whirl and torrent of this popularstorm that Willard Glazier was caught up and sweptinto the ranks of the Union army. His regiment, the Harris Light Cavalry, was orig-inally intended for the regular service—to rank asthe Seventh Regular Cavalry. The general govern-ment, however, concluded to limit the number of theirregiments of horse to six—the reasons for which are(118) oo do o <^1. THE HARRIS LIGHT CAVALRY, H9 given by Captain Glazier in his u Soldiers of theSaddle, as follows: Under the military regime of General Scott, thecavalry arm of the service had been almost entirelyoverlooked. His previous campaigns in Mexico, whichconsisted chiefly of the investment of walled towns andof assaults on fortresses, had not been favorable toextensive cavalry operations, and he was not disposed,at so advanced an age in life, materially to change histactics of war. Hence, this regiment was mustered into service asthe Second Regiment of New York Cavalry, and,as Senator Ira Harris had extended to the organizationthe influence of his name and purse, it soon came to becalled the Harris Light Cavalry, and retained thattitle throughout the whole of its eventful career.
