After 31 attempts spread over 200 years, the Channel Tunnel finally became a reality. UK tunneller Graham Fagg (in yellow helmet) and his French counterpart, Phillippe Cozette, exchange national flags following the historic undersea Channel Tunnel breakthrough on 1st December 1990 which created the first land bridge between the two countries since the Ice Age. The Channel Tunnel was the greatest construction project of the 20th century and is considered to be one of the wonders of the modern world
