Possibly the oldest church on Romney Marsh, its small chancel is a mix of Saxon and Norman, the high-pitched nave has 14th century features plus a C17th weatherboard bell turret with a lead cupola. A church on the site was mentioned in a charter of AD796 granted by King Offa of Mercia to Gambert, Archbishop of Canterbury. Rumwold is a legendary Saxon saint who died at the age of three days after declaring himself a Christian, requesting Baptism and Holy Communion, preaching a sermon, announcing his imminent death and issuing instructions for his burial.
