They may be thrown in on the faeces by raising the seat lid, ordown a shoot by pulling up a handle. They may have been previously siftedby means of a grating covering a pit under the kitchen fireplace. They mayalso he sifted in the closet itself (Fig. 158). Earth Closets (Moules system).—By automatic action or by raising ahandle, earth is added to the deposit each time the close! is used. One anda half lb. of clear dry sifted earth are thrown into the receptacle, which may be movable or non-movable. <1 1 loamy soil or brick earth is the best, and acts as an excellent deodorant and absorbent of both faeces and system acts well for isolated houses. The earth composl can be driedand used again and again, finally being restored to the land, having altered surprisingly little in the process. < j/a rcoa l Closets.—Charcoalmade from [teat or seaweed driesand deodorises excreta, and is veryeconomical. Pail System (Fig. 159).— Galvanised iron pails or w len tubs with well-fitting lids are amodification of the midden system.
