LA PATUM DE BERGA FESTIVITIES HUMAN HERITAGE BERGA TOWN EL BERGUEDA BARCELONA PROVINCE CATALUNYA CATALONIA SPAIN
The Patum de Berga, or simply "La Patum", is a popular and traditional festival that is celebrated each year in the Catalan city of Berga during the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. It consists of several performances of mystical and symbolical figures that dance at the rhythm of a big drum and vivid music. The balls are marked for their solemnity and the use of fire and pyrotechnics. It was declared by the Generalitat de Catalunya a Traditional Festival of National Interest in 1983, and was declared World Heritage by UNESCO on 2005. Founded at end of XIV century. It consists of a divided performance drama in several acts, that represent the fights of the Christians against the Moors, of arcangel San Miguel that, helped by angels, fights against Lucifer and his devils, the ridicules against Abul-Afer, Arab leader who invaded east country. However the act of the eagle expresses the satisfaction of Berga to have ended the feudal dominion and to be depending directly and exclusively by the king.
