ANEURYSMAL VAEIX. 635 simultaneously wounded; the result was that a communicationformed between the artery and its companion vein, and anotherbetween the two wounded veins, so that blood passed from theartery first into the humeral vein, and then on into the median-basilic vein. In the days when bleeding was very commonly practised, thiscondition was much more frequent than it is now. A remarkableinstance of the idiopathic origin of aneurysmal varix has beenrecorded by Pemberton, in which a communication formed betweenthe common femoral artery and vein some time after prolongedcompression of the artery for aneurysm (Fig. 182).
