For purposes of communication, a gangway 2 feet6 inches wide by 6 feet high was built through each cargo compart-ment, thus rendering it possible for the crew to pass entirely fromone end of the boat to the other. The freeboard to the main deckran the full length of the boat and was about 5^ to 6 feet wide. The cockpit at the top of the conning tower was about 15 feetabove the water, there being a shield in front so shaped as to throwthe wind and spray upward and clear of the face of the quartermasteror other observer.
