The road is excellent for the entire distance, andthe stage rolled rapidly over it. Three miles from SanJose we passed the mission of Santa Clara, a collectionof old buildings with a church. Here the land seemedto have been long under cultivation, judging from thelong rows of venerable and gigantic overgrown oakswhich border the road. There were also some finelarge orchards and vineyards here, which belong to themission. But the stage did not stop ; and we had notime to examine it. At half-past four, we reachedSan Jose.* * I cannot refrain from quoting a passage from Vancouver, one ofthe most reliable of the early voyagers to California, giving an accountof his journey from Monterey to Santa Clara. The reader will be struckwith the resemblance between this district as described by him and thebeautiful valley
