CELLOPHANE STRIP GRANNY KNOT UNDER POLARIZED LIGHT


A strip of thin cellophane shows built-in manufacturing stresses under polarised light and also shows how a double layer can further rotate the angle of polarisation resulting in the generation of additional colours. The cellophane was lit with white light and the colours are entirely due to light interference caused by phase differences introduced by the polarisation. The Granny knot might represent a knotty problem in physic or optics. The image demonstrates the spectrum of white light, the rainbow effect, or how an everyday piece of wrapping material can demonstrate physical principles. The knot might also represent tying of a knot for a wedding or other commitment. The looping curves might represent a sudden change and then represent progress in a new direction.
