Open star cluster M46. 19th-century astronomical observation of the open star cluster M46 (NGC 2437). North is at top. Also visible near centre as a nebulosity around one of the stars is the planetary nebula Herschel IV 39 Argus (H , NGC 2438). M46 is around 5500 light years away, in the constellation of Puppis. This 90-minute exposure was obtained on 24 February 1894, from the observatory in Crowborough, Sussex, UK. This observatory was built and operated by British amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts (1829-1904), one of the pioneers of the new techniques of astrophotography.
