Canine parvovirus particle. Computer artwork showing the structure of the outer protein coat (capsid) of a canine parvovirus type 2 particle (virion). The single stranded DNA genome inside the capsid is not visible. Canine Parvovirus Type 2 (CPV2) was first recognized in 1978 and spread worldwide in less than two years. There are two forms of the disease; the more common intestinal form and the rarer cardiac form. The intestinal form causes vomiting and severe diarrhoea, often leading to death due to dehydration. The cardiac form attacks the heart tissue leading to cardiovascular failure. A vaccine is available to protect against the virus.
