Gezicht op Vlaardingen Vlaerdinge (titel op object) Rotterodamum Hollandiae urbs celeberrima et situ portibusque mercaturae opportunissima Ao 1665 (Maaskaart) View Vlaardingen seen from the water. Left the hall and right of the Great Church. In the water several ships. Top center the arms of the city and the titel. Manufacturer : printmaker: Joost van Geel to own design: Joost van Geel Publisher: Jacob Quack (possible) Publisher: Jan Houwens (I) (possible) supervision: Jacob Quack Place manufacture: Rotterdam Dating : 1666 - 1698 Material: paper Technique: etching / engra (printing process) Measurements: sheet: h 168 mm (inner plate edge cut off) × W 568 mm (inner plate edge cut) Remarks This print was originally intended to be part of the so-called Maas Card from 1666, published under the title "urbs Rotterodamum Hollandiae celeberrima et situ portibusque mercaturae opportunissima. Ao. 1665. Although the year 1665 is in the title, appears in archival research that the map was completed until 1666 (see documentation). This card consists of (from top to bottom): - a title strip (printed from a single sheet); - a large cityscape of Rotterdam (printed on six sheets, see dome record for a virtual-mounted version); - a map of the Maas (printed from four plates) with left and right faces of city Maassluis, Delfshaven, Delft, Schiedam, The Brill and Vlaardingen (printed from three plates, on each plate two); - (optionally) a description of Rotterdam in letterpress (these are at least four different versions known). The card was originally issued by Jacob Quack. Jan Houwens (I) kept at least in 1698 another edition (dated in the description of Rotterdam, may he brought all the maps previously with another variant of the description). Insofar examine is the only change Houwens put in the plates' Jan Houwens excudit "on the ship right corner of the cityscape of Rotterdam (see RP-P-1894-A-18354F).
