(Radiogram by Dr. Harvey.) THE CERVICAL REGION 213 Spinous processes Cervical transverse processes Dorsal transverseproceis ascertaining the condition of the bodies of the cervical vertebrae, the integrityof the spinal canal, and the presence of abnormalities of the region. Thepresence of cervical ribs canbest be shown by the antero-posterior position. The cervical region hasbeen partially shown inFig. 182, but it is necessaryto illustrate this particularregion fully, for it is herethat the difficulty of show-ing a fracture or dislocationmay be very great, and insome instances impossible. An antero - posteriorview of the neck region isnot a very satisfactory one, because of the superimposingof the occipital region andthe lower jaw. In cases. Cervical vertebrae l°lo6D Dorsal vertebrs Fig. -Diagram to illustrate the anatomical points inFig. 183. where it is desirable to show the atlas and axis, and the articulation between the former and theoccipital bone, it is necessaryto take the skiagram throughthe open mouth, as describedin detail above. The resultingpicture is necessarily small, but large enough to includethe parts desired. The position usually takenis the lateral one, with thehead rotated towards theplate. It is then possible toget a fairly good outline ofthe seven cervical vertebrasand the adjacent portions ofthe base of the skull. The Fig. 185.—Radiogram showing presence of cervical rib on bodies of the cervical vertebrae left Slde- are readily shown, but to get accurate outlines the head must not be moved to either side.
