He returns home broken-hearted and discouraged. The one bright thing in his lifeis his little girl and her dog. The canine is the constantcompanion of the girl, an intelligent and handsome speci-men of a dog. The dog is noticed by the daughter of thecontractor and she covets it. To ask is to have her wishgratified under ordinary circumstances, as nothing is denied. her. Her father tries to purchase the dog, of?ering a pricefar in excess of its worth, but the child, while poor, lovesher dog and will not part with it. The father is unableto obtain work, and the child falls ill. The family purse isdepleted and they have no money with which to secure theservices of a physician or purchase medicines. The fathersecretly sells the dog to his former employer and returnshome with money and a doctor, happy and relieved. Thechild is disconsolate over the loss of her dog and refusesto take the medicine. She moans and begs for her dog andthe father is grief stricken. He returns to the home of therich man and steals the dog. The child is happy at its re-turn and improves in health instantly. There can be butone result—the theft is discovered—and the owner of thedog brings an officer to arrest the father. It is all explainedto the contractor, and his heart is touched. The little girlis made happy by a present of the dog, and the
