Appendicitis due to threadworm (Enterobius vermicularis) infection. Light micrograph of a section through an appendix infected with threadworms (round, yellow). The infection has caused appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix). This is a rare complication of infection. Threadworms are nematode worms that parasitise the large intestine and caecum of many animals. In humans they cause the common infection enterobiasis. Nematodes are unsegmented worms that may be parasitic or free-living depending upon the species. Magnification: x150 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
