A Saturn V rocket lifts off from Cape Canaveral in Florida with the crescent moon beyond. This is Apollo 8, which put Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders into orbit around the moon. It launched on 21 December 1968 and was the first time man left earth orbit.
