Fall migration. — A single California gull, unusually early, ap- peared at Monterey, CaL, August 1, 1894; no more were seen until August 21, and by the first of September the species was fairly com- mon. In 1896 the first was not seen until Sep- tember 28, the next October 9, and it was common from this lat- ter date (Loomis). At Berkeley, CaL, the first was seen October 9, 1888 (Palmer); near San Pedro, CaL, Sep- tember 13, 1902 (Daggett); Magdalena Island, Lower California, November 24, 1905 (Nelson and Goldman); Puget Sound, Wash., August 3 and 12 (specimens in U. S. National Museum); and Chilliwack, British Columbia, August 26, 1889 (Brooks). The last was seen at Hay River, Mackenzie, November 5, 1908 (Jones).. Fig. 21.—California gull {Larus californkus)..
