Through the heart of Patagonia . danger, on account of the hostileattitude of the tribes. The amount of valuable work done by did not end with his personal expeditions. Each summerof late years the Argentine and Chilian Boundary Commissionshave been surveying and opening up the country. First and lastDr. Moreno must always be regarded as the great geographer ofPatagonia. Among the gentlemen engaged on the boundary work I shouldlike to mention the Norwegian Herr Hans P. Waag, who, onbehalf of the Argentine Commission, penetrated from the Pacificcoast up the river De las Heras to lake Buenos Aires, and fromthence overland to Trelew. It would be difficult to overpraise thework of this traveller. Others, who as pioneers, travellers, scientific men, or surveyors, have taken a part in the good work of making the interior ofPatagonia known to the world are Baron Nordenskjold, , and the members of the Chilian and Argentine BoundaryCommissions. I think that in any such list as the above mention PATAGONIA II. A rATACOXlAN should be made of those who first settle in a district, and whorealise in greater degree than even the pioneer explorers the diffi-culties and drawbacks of a new country, and undoubtedly theirhardihood is of immense and enduring value. I would, therefore, include the name of the Waldron familv, who have taken a laro-epart in settling thesouthern districtsof Patagonia andalso in the colonis-ing of Tierra delFuego. With this briefreference to themore importantjourneys hithertomade in SouthernPatagonia, it maybe well to o;ive heresome description ofthe country as it appears to-day. There are upon the easterncoasts some settlements, as I have mentioned, and also the Welshcolonies of Trelew, Daw^son, Gaimon, besides these a very smalland recent one exists at Colohaupi, near Lake Musters, andanother, The i6th October, far away in the Cordillera. Thislast is the single settlement of any size south of parallel 40 in thecentral interior.
