A piece of black stone engravedwith floral designs as the sacred symbol of the Crownis the object of worship and veneration. The original,which may be either a crown or the frontal bone,kept in a pot covered over with a red silk cloth, isknown as the Gooptapeet and is seldom exposed orexhibited. FANCY PRESS [ 279 ] Old Kriteswari did not escape the influence ofBuddhism, for one finds the imag-e of Buddha, in theusual sitting- posture of meditation, located in one ofthe temples close by and now worshipped as an imageof Bhoirab. The whole place is overgrown with jungle and thetemples are in need of urgent repairs. Those lastdone were by Babu Ganga Das Rai of Nashipore,the late Naib Dewan of the Nizamut. There is nogood water in the vicinity. A large concuorse ofpeople assemble every Tuesday and Saturday duringthe month of Pous, when Khinchri, Baigan ka bhoortaand toddy play an important part in the pleasures andenjoyments of the masses.
