It was upon tlie shores of the north branchof the Crow River, that meanders throughthe emerald prairies and leafy groves of thistown, that John lluy and Thomas H. Skin-ner, the first settlers of the county, passed thelonesome and dreary winter of 1855, as relatedin the history of the early settlement of thecounty, in a former portion of this ). M. Hanson, a talented young lawyer of. Minneapolis, and Rudolph Shultz had comehere with Iluy and Skinner, but on the ap-proach of winter returned to the FlourCity, where Hanson died the followingApril. Shultz returned to this county in thespring, and took up a claim in what is nowHarvey township. With the advent of the new year of 1856came new settlers, the first to ariive l)eing])ossibl3 Milton G. Moore and Elijah exact date of their arrival can not beascertained at the present moment, but theformer was ajipointed register of deeds andthe latter sheriff at the time of the organiza-tion of the county, that same spring. Nei-ther of them remained long, both leavingthe county a few years after their settle-ment, probably in 1858. During the year 1856, others made settle-ments in the township, among whom werethe following named, some of whom stilllive here, some have moved away, while stillanother poition have passed to their rewardbeyond the grave: Jose])h Weymer, Sr., Jacob Weymer, Jewett, Samuel anil Du
