We have had a very hard fight and the first day the Rebels had the best of it, driving General Banks[Nathaniel P. Banks] port of the army, but the second and especially third day we gave them more than they bargined for driving them back several miles with great slaughter, but being without sufficient supplies or ammunition the army was ordered to fall back to the river; we hated this very much after we had given them a thrashing I am fealing well and doing well and expect soon to be ready to do my share toward giving them another turn all of our western boys done bravely and they saved the day! dont be uneasy about me and I will write to you again soon your son David T.
