Sunny view paved walkway to Haus der Kulturen der Welt, through lake with Henry Moore bronze sculpture, Tiergarten Park, Berlin
The House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) is Germany's national centre for the presentation of international contemporary arts, with a focus on non-European cultures and societies. It presents performances, lectures, concerts and other artistic work from around the world. It is located in Tiergarten Park, being a neigbour of the Carillon (bell tower) and New German Chancellery Building. Originally known as the Kongresshalle (Congress Hall), it was a gift from the USA, being designed by American architect, Paul Stubbins, as part of the American contribution to the 1957 Interbau architectural exhibition. After a partial collapse of the roof in 1980, it was rebuilt in its original style in 1987, in time for the 750th anniversary of the founding of Berlin. John spoke here on his visit to West Berlin in June 1963. Two reflecting lakes front the building. Because of the shape of the immense parabolic roof, Berliners have nicknamed the building 'The Pregnant Oyster'. Henry Moore's heaviest bronze sculpture "Large Divided Oval: Butterfly' (1985-86) is situated in the middle in one of the lakes in front of the building. Weighing some 9 tonnes, it was Moore's final major work., being sold by the Henry Moore Foundation to Berlin for million Deutsche Marks ($ million) in 1988. The sculpture was restored in 2010.
