At each end of the transept wasoriginally a lofty tower; that on the south has beendestroyed and that on the north re-built. It opens by alofty arch to the transept, and the interior effect thusproduced is superb. The central dome over the crossingis raised on a drum as a lantern. There is a high wall-arcade as at Solignac and Cahors, with two round-headedwindows in each bay, and chapels project directly fromthe great apse without an ambulatory.
