There wasa shy reserve about him which prevented himfrom getting widely known, but those whowere favoured with his friendship were im-pressed by his quiet strength which gave asuggestion of unrealized capabilities. No onecould say that he was a minus man, buthe never obtruded himself and his conscienti-ousness was never paraded. On looking backto those years that were so rich in companion-ship, one sees how much of Massons characterwas due to his simple piety and to a deepfoundation of nobility.
