Thecompany turns out to all alarms throughthe Richmond district and the Bay, and from Laguna to Geary streets. Thereare eight men in the company. It hasrendered a good account of itself at allthe fires it has participated in, and hasalways been able to keep its end the Brannan-street fire the companylabored continuously for seven hours,and at the Baldwin fire for eight company has a good CAPT. JAMES LAVDEN The captain is James Layden, who hasbeen in the Department since April i,1886. He is a native of San Francisco,and was born August 13, 1863. He be-came foreman of Engine No. 23, January20, 1898, after several promotions, enter-ing Engine No. 15 as hoseman, and after-wards to assistant foreman of Engine , then to his present rank. The com-pany has the second-best record at theNorth Beach drill tower, i sec. The other members are : Lieutenant,Pat Barry; engineer, Chas. Hewitt;driver, J. J. McCarthy; stoker, W. ; hosemen, Geo. McDonald, , and Wm. F. Curran. SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN Patrick Barry was born in Ireland andcame to this country when a mere with volunteers is 1864; joined paidDepartment in 1870 as call man; pro- W. J. Shields, born in San Francisco in1873, joined Department November 15,1894, as hoseman of Engine No. 23, andnow ranks as stoker of same
