According to Greek tradition, Penelope was the wife of Odysseus, king of Ithaca. Odysseus spent 10 years fighting against the Trojans (Trojan War said to have been around 1184 ) and then another 10 years trying to get back home. After arriving back in Ithaca, Odysseus meets the swineherd and old friend Eumaeus. Eumaeus invites him to his house and feeds him but does not recognize him at first. Telemachus, Odysseus' son arrives to tell the faithful Eumaeus of the news he has heard of his father. In this 1918 illustration, Telemachus is shown at the moment he makes his surprise return entry into Eumaeus' hut. The surprised Eumaeus lets the food he is bringing to Odysseus is startled as he known Telemachus is his son, but does not yet want to give away his identity to him.
