Friern Barnet is an area within the London Borough of Barnet. It is a suburban development situated miles ( km) north of Charing Cross. The centre of Friern Barnet is formed by the busy intersection of Colney Hatch Lane (which runs north-south), Woodhouse Road (taking west-bound traffic towards North Finchley) and Friern Barnet Road (leading east towards New Southgate). Almshouses are charitable housing provided to enable people (typically elderly people who can no longer work to earn enough to pay rent) to live in a particular community. They are often targeted at the poor of a locality, at those from certain forms of previous employment, or their widows, and are generally maintained by a charity or the trustees of a bequest.
