Having now explored the south-west corner we return tothe oval group of palms near the entrance and entering themain central drive illustrated by plates 378 and 392, we lindourselves at once in a grove of exquisite beauty, its charmingfeatures being due to the careful planting of the shrubs andtrees, which form a bank of ornamental and flowering plantsrising gradually from the edge to the tall trees which constitutethe background and overhanging canopy. The first turn on \io„„,ncittthe left is Monument Road, where we shall find the famous Koaukauri pine of New Zealand, the curious candle tree with itspendulous fruits which resemble so many candles hanging bytheir wicks from the branches; and the most interesting doublecocoanut palm [Lodoicca sechcllaruni).
