Pro-democracy protestors occupied the airport to raise international awareness of the human rights deterioration in Hong Kong. Some of them volunteered to become human "Lennon walls" for slogans and words of encouragement to be displayed. Pro-democracy protests broke out and escalated into urban conflicts when the Hong Kong government, under the rule of China, refused to withdraw a controversial extradition bill and condoned police brutality against initially peaceful protestors.
