The par-ticular fate of the large sexual cells is still uncertain. The surround-ing mesodermic tissue grows into the mesothelial mass and contributesthe intertubular connective tissue as well as the denser portions of theframework represented by the tunica albuginea and the trabeculae. The system of canals forming the connection between the testicleand the epididymis, including the vasa efferentia and the conivasculosi, are derived from the tubules of the Wolffian body;by the ingrowth of these canals into the embryonal testicle the isolatedsexual gland is provided with excretory passages. Other remainsof the lower tubules of the Wolffian body constitute the para-didymis. The main tube of the epididymis and the vas deferensare the direct representatives of the Wolffian duct. The Miillerian duct in the male is atrophic, since its extremeanterior and posterior parts alone persist; these remain as the non- 244 NORMAL Stalked or sessile hydatid, in relation with the epididymis, and as the short di\-erticukini ojKnini; into the prostatic portion ofthe urethra, the uterus masculinus or sinus pocularis, which istherefore the homologue of the uterus. In the female the indifferent sexual gland early exhibits a groupingof the mesothelial elements into cylindrical masses, tlie sexual cords, which in the ovary, however, retain a closer connection with the ger-minal mesothelium than do those of the testicle. Many groups ofepithelial elements are disposed vertically to the free surface of theorgan, and constitute the primary egg-tubes. In the ovary, as inthe testicle, the sexual cords contain tlie large sexual cells, the latterbeing much more plentiful in the female than in the male gland. The ovarian stroma originateslater as a secondary ingrowthof the surrounding mesodermbetween the groups of sex
