In Nov^ember, 1845, the long cherishedobject of the Society was achieved, andthe Library boasted a building whichit could call its own, and which had beenspecially designed to suit the purposefor which it w^as to be used. For abouttwenty years thev had been forced tomake shift in dwelling-houses or sparerooms in Government Offices. Duringthat period the funds had been sufficient,but the accommodation unsuitable andoften inadequate. The ensuing twentv-iive vears found them in an almost. R. , 1S45-6. constant state ot poverty, but wMth acommodious and handsome home onone of the finest sites in vSydney. Formany years it attracted to its ReadingRoom and Lecture Hall the cultureand learning of Sydney, and becamethe recognised meeting-place andhome of literary and scientific amongst its prominentmembers many men of remarkablemental calibre and earnestness, it becamea much more powerful educational factor
