In Nov^ember, 1845, the long cherishedobject of the Society was achieved, andthe Library boasted a building whichit could call its own, and which had beenspecially designed to suit the purposefor which it w^as to be used. For abouttwenty years thev had been forced tomake shift in dwelling-houses or sparerooms in Government Offices. Duringthat period the funds had been sufficient,but the accommodation unsuitable andoften inadequate. The ensuing twentv-iive vears found them in an almost. Formany years it attracted to its ReadingRoom and Lecture Hall the cultureand learning of Sydney, and becamethe recognised meeting-place andhome of literary and scientific amongst its prominentmembers many men of remarkablemental calibre and earnestness, it becamea much more powerful educational factor
