The church was consecratedJuly T5th 1822. Rufus King gave $500 and a stove, andhe with Timothy Nostrand and L. E. A. Eigenbrodtassisted the carpenters in planning the edifice. The tastefor church music was at a low ebb. Music books werefew and not much studied, the singing being by roterather than by note. Music such as it was was 1827 a flute was introduced, and then a bassoon. Nottill 1835 was an organ introduced, a gift of the ladies ofthe missionary society. GRACE CHURCH, JAMAICA. 243. I fjRACK fmiRrn, Jamaica. Consecrated .July 15 18:: On December 3d 1829 Geo. E. Ryerson was arrestedfor stealing prayer books, altar decorations and carpetfrom Grace Church. Rev. Wm. L. Johnson commenced his labors here Mayist 1830, at a salary of $600 a year and finding his owndwelling. He was then rich in Brooklyn lots, but, beinga better minister than a financier, he lived to see the endof his wealth. Being a good classical scholar of a literaryturn he published several sermons. He died August 4th1870, aged 70. Masonic honors were superadded to theusual funeral solemnities. In January 1837 a free school for negroes was estab-lished by the church, It had 55 scholars. Soon afterthis a Sunday-school was started; but it did not succeedvery well till Jeremiah A^alentine became superintendentand Miss Anne Van Wyck taught and drilled the scholarsin singing.
