Low cloud drifts above the ferry dock and Art Nouveau-style Hotel Olivedo, built in 1896, on the Lago di Como waterfront at Varenna, Lombardy, Italy.

Varenna, Lombardy, Italy: the Hotel Olivedo, built in Art Nouveau style in 1896, stands in Piazza Martiri on the Lago di Como waterfront beside the dock from which passenger ferries criss-cross the lake to destinations such as Bellagio and Menaggio. From the ferry dock, a raised walkway, the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk for Lovers) leads around a little headland to the Riva Grande and the historic centre of Varenna, which features two ancient frescoed churches. Varenna's other attractions include the botanical gardens and museum of the Villa Monastero, the gardens of the Villa Cipressi, and a fortress, the medieval Castello di Vezio, on the hill above the village. Varenna, founded by fishermen in 769 AD, was destroyed by the rival commune of Como in 1126, and in 1169 it received refugees from the lake's only island, the Isola Comacina, who had met the same fate. Today, Varenna mainly dedicates itself to tourism. It is one of the most popular destinations on Como’s eastern shore, with a lengthy tourist season guaranteed by its mild climate.
