Old woman holding spindle & with dog at her feet is seated on R opposite young woman who is seated & in an attitude of sleeping or listening; behind them is small round table with claw feet & monumental ruined building; in R background soldiers take woman captive (UPR & LWR BRD) centered cartouche with scene flanked by putti, birds & rinceau; (L & R BRD) bottom to top: shell, Corinthian capital, male caryatid half-figure, masks, male figure in cartouche at mid-point, foliate ornament, pair of birds, bust of siren supporting basket of flowers This series was copied after a series initially created in Brussels for Francis I after Raphaelesque models traditionally attributed to Michiel Coxie. This series was very popular during the first half of the 17th century & was woven in many Parisian ateliers.
