Disadvantages of the in situ bulk sampler are: (a) a large volume of a water- sediment mixture must be collected to obtain a significant quantity of sediment; (b) because the device samples instan- taneously, many samples must be collected to give a repre- sentative distribution of suspended sediment; and (c) fluid velocity measurements must be known at the location and instant of sampling to determine a sediment transport rate.
