About Docklands Docklands became a part of the City of Melbourne municipality on 1 July 2007. The suburb's 200 hectares of land and water are on Victoria Harbour, west of the city centre. Its inclusion doubled the size of Melbourne’s central city and returned a significant area of waterfront to the city. The area is close to Melbourne's main transport networks, including Southern Cross Station, and is well-known as home to the Etihad Stadium and a large number of modern buildings, public spaces and artworks. From the original development at New Quay, featuring apartments, restaurants and marina, Docklands has grown as a waterfront precinct offering a mix of inner city living, shopping, business, parks, entertainment, dining, sporting events, community events, arts and culture. Docklands has also become the national headquarters for a number of major businesses, including the National Australia Bank, ANZ, Myer, AXA, Bendigo Bank, Medibank Private and the Bureau of Meteorology. It is estimated that by around 2031 Docklands will be a residential area for just under 16,000 people. Upon completion, Docklands is planned to attract 20 million visitors each year and be a workplace for 40,000 people daily.
