The 1912 caption for this illustration reads: “How Bible was read to people in Shakespeare's time. Preaching from beautiful English version of Bible at village cross in Tudor times from painting by Mr G E Robertson.” William Shakespeare (died 1616) was an English playwright, poet and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". George Edward Robertson (died 1920) was a British artist.
