History of Lincoln, England - An 1930's sketch of the Dunston Pillar, Lincoln. It was a former 'land lighthouse' and was commissioned by Sir Francis Dashwood founder of the Knights of St Francis, (later the Monks of Medmenham) and the Hellfire Club) in 1751 as a gift for his wife Sarah (Ellys) Dashwood, who complained about the unsafe area near her childhood home, Nocton. Its purpose was to improve the safety of travellers in the treacherous area known for its many incidents of highway robbery.
