Ezetimibe drug molecule. Computer model of ezetimibe, a cholesterol-lowering medication marketed under the trade names Ezetrol, Zetia and Ezemibe. It acts by decreasing cholesterol absorption in the intestine. In addition, the decreased cholesterol absorption leads to an increase in LDL-cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) uptake into cells, thus decreasing levels in blood plasma. Having high levels of LDL compared with HDL (high-density lipoprotein or 'good' cholesterol) in the blood is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Atoms are colour-coded: oxygen (red), carbon (purple), nitrogen (blue), fluorine (green) and hydrogen (white).
