Although the map was printed in 1861, it was engraved in 1852 (this date is printed on the map), and the territories of each country enclosed within the engraved borders differ from those indicated by the hand colouring. The engraved borders, as confirmed by the lettering indicating the territories of 'MEXIQUE' and 'TEXAS', reflect the earlier situation before the Mexican-American War, and during the period of the Independent Republic of Texas.
